Shorter Groom?
This is something I get asked about more often than you might think—and I want to reassure you right away: a height difference is never a problem in wedding photography. With thoughtful posing, natural movement, and the right perspective, your photos will look elegant, romantic, and completely effortless.
I’ve photographed couples where the groom is shorter than the bride, and the key is focusing on connection, not comparison.
Posing That Works Beautifully
I use poses that naturally minimize height differences without ever feeling forced. Sitting on steps, benches, or low walls is one of my favorite options—it creates intimacy and removes height as a focal point altogether. Walking poses are another go-to; movement softens everything and keeps the images relaxed and candid.
When standing, I’ll often place the groom slightly higher—on a step, curb, or gentle slope—while keeping both of you close so it feels natural. I may also guide the bride to shift her weight, bend one knee, or lean in, which subtly lowers her eye line without looking staged.
Close embraces, forehead touches, and cheek-to-cheek moments are always incredibly romantic and naturally take attention away from height.
Styling Considerations
I always encourage couples to choose what feels most like them. That said, small styling choices can help with balance—such as flats or low heels for portraits, or dress shoes with a slightly thicker sole for the groom. Flowing, softer dress silhouettes also photograph beautifully and keep proportions balanced.
How I Shoot
From a photography standpoint, I pay close attention to angles and composition. Shooting slightly from above, framing you within doorways or arches, and cropping at the waist or mid-torso keeps the focus exactly where it should be—on your expressions, your hands, and your connection.
What Matters Most
Height has absolutely nothing to do with how in love you look in your wedding photos. Some of the most timeless, emotional images I’ve captured feature tall brides and shorter grooms. What truly makes a photograph beautiful is confidence, closeness, and trust—and that’s what I focus on every time.
